When I was growing up my mum would always have a knitting project on the go. Usually it would be a scarf or cardigan for herself or a jumper for dad, although his stock joke would always be that whenever mum knitted for him, it would always end up with one arm 6 inches longer than the other!
I remember going on summer road trips where mum would be knitting in the front passenger seat whilst my brother and I inevitably bickered in the back of the car. In fact, I can hardly remember a time when mum wasn’t knitting.
One thing that does come to mind is that mum only ever seemed to have one project on the go at any one time. My Teresa seems to have multiple crochet projects on the go at once which are stashed away in her array of fancy project bags. I thought this was unusual until I discovered that most knitters or crocheters have several projects on the go and it is in fact unusual to only be working on one garment at a time.
My introduction to hand dyed yarn was by Teresa. She would take (drag) me to a yarn shop in whichever place we were visiting including London, Northern France, Tenerife, Florida and many, many more. And of course no visit to a yarn store is complete without a purchase or two! I’ve also been to a few yarn shows now too so it’s exciting to think that we will soon be part of some fantastic shows as an exhibitor.
Having visited so many yarn stores, I can see that there’s is a real sense of community. I have personally come from a heavily regulated industry so it’s refreshing to work in such a relaxed environment where everyone seems so lovely.
Gavin.
