The Scheepjes brand was founded in the town of Veenendaal in Utrecht at the end of the 18th century. Dirk Steven van Schuppen ran a cottage industry of combers and spinners who processed raw fleece into yarn.
Over time his small company grew and grew and eventually became the famous yarn brand we know today!
Where does the name ‘Scheepjes’ come from?
Scheepjes has gone by many names since the 18th century, including ‘Van Schuppen’s Wool Business’ and ‘Widow D.S. Van Schuppen and Son.’ The name ‘Scheepjes’ appeared in the early 20th century as the company continued to expand.
Who owns Scheepjes Yarn today?
This amazing growth of Scheepjes continued right up until the 1960s, when a variety of economic factors began to affect the business.
In 1988, after almost 190 years of growth, the company went bankrupt. But that wasn’t the end! Twenty-two years later, the brand was revitalised by the De Bondt company.
Today, knitters and crocheters can enjoy the vast range or colours and fibres produced by Scheepjes. We are proud to stock their luxurious colour packs. You can count on quality with this well-established brand!
