What are double-pointed knitting needles?
Double-pointed needles (sometimes abbreviated to DPNs) are short knitting needles with a point at either end. They are normally sold in packs of four or five. We offer packs of DPNs in a single size, as well as sets including several sizes. Just like standard knitting needles, they come in a variety of materials, such as bamboo, metal, and wood.
What are double-pointed needles used for?
Double-pointed needles are used to knit small circumferences in the round. You might need them to make:
- The tops of hats
- Sleeves
- Mittens or gloves
- Socks
- Small objects such as dolls or toys
- I-cords
Did you know - before circular needles were introduced, jumpers were also knit in the round on extra-long double-pointed needles!
What size needles do I need?
If you are following a pattern, this will normally state what size needles you need. The label or band on your yarn might also give you a suggested size.
