Merino yarn is a very popular choice for both knitting and crochet projects due to the high level of warmth it provides, relative to its weight. By trapping warmth between the fibres, merino knitting wool generally provides warmer clothing than synthetic garments of equal weight. It’s also well known for being flexible and easy to work with.
Merino wool comes from the Merino breed of sheep. The wool is known for being very fine and soft and has been used in garments for hundreds of years. Although the sheep breed is originally from Spain, Merino sheep are now raised and kept around the world.
Because it is an animal fibre, Merino wool is naturally self-cleaning and odour repellent. You might find that hanging your Merino wool garments up to air out is enough to keep them feeling clean and smelling fresh. However, most garments will require washing at some point.
Untreated Merino yarn should be handwashed with wool wash and then laid flat to dry.
Superwash treated wool yarn can be cleaned in a washing machine, though it’s still best to use a delicate cycle. Some superwash yarn can even go in the dryer, but always check the information on your yarn label or band for specific information.
If you are knitting for a baby or child and want to use real wool, superwash treated Merino wool is a great choice, as it will be very soft and easy to clean.
